A distinctive characteristic of the Otterhound is its massive head. The head is moderately long and has a vague stop. It has dark facial features. The ears are moderately long and hang down past the chin. The breed has a straight back with a tail that is both set and carried high. The neck is very muscular and slightly angles to the back.
