The Irish Wolfhound is a large breed with an unusual coarse coat. The breed has a muscular body that provides it great strength. It has a long muzzle that ends in a point. The ears are small and lie back against the side of the head. The breed has an elongated neck that is also muscular. The neck is angled and smoothly transitions to the back. Its tail is average size and curl upward. Its chest is both deep and broad. It has very muscular legs and hocks. The coat is coarse and tends to slightly cover most of the facial features.
