The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has a strong form that equips the breed for hunting game on land and in the water; two activities for which it was developed. As a hunting companion, the muscular yet lean legs afford it agility and quickness. The torso is long and level and extends to the tail that is medium in length. The chest is broad and deep. The coat is any shade of dark brown. The light-brown eyes complement the dark coat. The coat is thick all over. The tail hangs past the hocks and slightly curls upward.
