Matting is not usually considered a positive feature of a dogтАЩs coat. In the case of the Bergamasco Sheepdog, it is its pride and glory. Undoubtedly the most distinctive feature of the breed, its coat is full of heavy matting that almost looks unmanageable. The fur is long and thinner at the face and just about obscures its dark brown eyes. The facial features are large and broad. Lightweight and hanging loosely, the ears seem to blend with the soft thin fur at the crown of the head. In appearance the dog seems to have a large body. The bulk of its weight and size is its heavy coat. It actually has a medium-size body that is only somewhat longer in length. The frame is muscular and strong. Its tail is bushy closer to the hindquarters and thinner in fur at the end.
