A shaggy coat with an extended amount of fur under its chin is how the Bearded Collie is usually characterized. The unique appearance of the breed is attributed to its breeding for both herding and show competition. Characteristics of physical prowess, which are typically associated with herding dogs are not apparent in the Beardie. Its body is longer than it is tall and medium in size. It has strong legs that are straight and completely covered with fur. The lengthy coat makes the facial features ambiguous, except for the large eyes that tend to be animated. Most of the time the ears lie loosely against the sides of the large head.
