A herding dog has to have a unique quickness that enables it to keep up with the herd. The Australian Kelpie meets the challenge. It is not only fast, but agile and light on its feet. Its speed and agility is due in part to its strong hindquarters. The muzzle is long and the mask is usually multi-colored. All types have a broad chest. The coat is layered, the undercoat being more durable to protect the dog from the elements.
