The Sussex Spaniel is a breed of short, but muscular build. Its legs are very short and well muscled. The front legs are straight for most types, but front legs that are slightly bowed are also acceptable. The back legs are well angled. The breed's torso is moderately long. The head and muzzle are long; the muzzle more broad. There is a definite stop. It has large eyes and ears. The eyes are light brown. The ears are set below eye level and hang down past the chin. The ears are heavily feathered. It has a shorter than average neck that angles somewhat to its straight back. The breed's tail is docked. Like most spaniels, its coat is wavy and lies close to its body. The coat is longest at the tail and body.
