Description
The Russian Ovtcharka has a medium-size frame, but it is very muscular and strong. Its body is well proportioned. It has a long head with a vague stop. The eyes and ears are average in size. The ears are "V" shaped and hang low past the face. Its nose is prominent. The breed has a back that is level and powerful. Its elongated neck merges to the back smoothly. There is wideness between the chest, which is also very deep. This breed's coat is very thick and long.
Temperament
The Russian Ovtcharka has strong traits that are not effectively eliminated with training. It is very lively and strong. While it may respect its owner, it has tendency to be independent. This breed can react aggressively toward people it doesn't know. It is a great guard dog. Socialization training is a must if it is going to be a pet. Even with training it can react aggressively with other dogs, even those that live in its same household. Female types usually are not as aggressive as males.

The main concern in relation to the breed's living conditions, is how much exercise it will obtain. The best living conditions for this breed will enable the breed to be active.

The Russian Ovtcharka has a moderate energy level. It must have room for physical exercise or be given opportunities for exercise. Indoor types are active, but definitely have a greater need for exercise.
