| Description |
| The Irish Water Spaniel has a look similar to a large poodle. The coat is short, very smooth, and curly. It has a crown of curls. The head is large with a comparable muzzle and long ears that hang alongside the neck. The neck is long and very well muscled. Its body is medium in length. The breed has a deep chest with a rib cage that is well sprung. The breed stands on front legs that are very straight. The back legs are angled. |

| Temperament |
| The Irish Water Spaniel is a typical spaniel. It has a friendly nature and shows devotion to those close to it. It is amiable to people it meets for the first time, but doesn't trust them until it has spent some time around them. Although it has a loud bark, it only barks to alert its family of someone's arrival to the home. It isn't silly, but does have a playful nature that children can appreciate. The breed exists a working dog. It is capable of learning new things and is very responsive to training. It is recommended that training begin when the breed is a puppy. It is more apt to adapting social skills when training starts young. |

| Spaniels are susceptible to some health problems. The Irish Water Spaniel may develop condition called eye entropion. An eyelid being curved inwards characterizes this condition. The condition is very painful and requires surgery. The breed may also develop hypothyroidism and ear infections. |

| Wide-open living conditions are the most suitable for the Irish Water Spaniel. The breed needs this space so that it can remain active and energetic. Indoor environments do not enable the breed to get the exercise it needs. If it is kept in a yard, the area should be properly enclosed to prevent the breed from escaping. |

| The Irish Water Spaniel is a breed with a significant amount of fortitude. It was bred with endurance necessary for hunting. On its own the breed will probably obtain the exercise it needs to stay healthy. It is recommended that the breed is given several opportunities for exercise. The breed can handle just about any level of exercise. It will high power physical, such as jogging and swimming as well as a short or long walk in the neighborhood. |
