| Description |
| Wrinkles on its massive head are the distinctive quality of the Dogue de Bordeaux. Its general appearance is harsh. The body is somewhat low to the ground and massive. It is not overweight, but its muscular build and short stature gives it the look. Another distinct quality of the breed is its mouth. The mouth is composed of an excessive amount of skin and fur that hangs down and obscures the jaw line. Its ears hang down inward toward its face. The neck is thick and features an excessive amount of loose skin. The tail hangs down almost to the hocks. |

| Temperament |
| The gentle temperament of the Dogue de Bordeau does not equal its rough appearance. Over the years the intensity of the breed has been bred out. It is considered a tolerant dog that is only aggressive when provoked by another dog. Socialization training is imperative if the dog is to live in a household with another dog. It is fine with children, but should be supervised when interacting them. The breed is dedicated to its family and will protect it wholeheartedly against intruders. The breed requires firm training and an owner that is not timid. It best if the owner has experience with dogs of its size and nature. |
